In this guide we have for you, we will be focusing on the eighteenth letter of the alphabet: the letter R. It has already appeared a few times in this guide alone, and is a fairly common letter!
That’s why we’re giving it the fancy treatment as we learn how to draw a fancy letter R in just 6 fun and easy steps.
We have an awesome design, and we will be showing you exactly how to draw it easily and with style. Not only this, but we also want to leave room for your own creativity.
Once we have covered our ideas, we will cover a few ways you can bring your own creativity to the design. We will also go over a few extra ideas you can use to take the design even further.
So with all that said, let’s begin with the first step of the guide!
Let’s Get Started
STEP 1:
In this guide, we are not merely drawing a regular letter R. It will be a fancy version, so that means tons of extra details.
We will be drawing the first of these details now, but first we would recommend drawing a rough version of the letter R.
This letter is a bit more complicated than others, especially when it comes to the capital letter version we will be creating here.
To do this, using the lightest pencil you have to write out the letter in a way that is easy for you is the best way to go about it.
This isn’t something you have to do, but we think it will make things much easier for you. When you’re ready, we can then start drawing the first flourish of the design.
This flourish will be in the form of a large spiral that will be attached to the upper left side of the letter. When drawing this spiral, there are two ways to do it.
You could try to draw it all in one long, continuous twisting line. Or, you could use two lines running parallel to one another to create the spiral.
As you can see, there will be a pointy tip at the center of the spiral as well. With this drawn, we can then start drawing the actual letter in the next step.
STEP 2:
Next, we will be drawing the rest of the left-hand side of this letter R. We will start this step simply, and it will start right where you left off in the previous step.
You can do this by drawing a small pointy shape at the top of the letter, connecting directly to the upper spiral. This little pointy shape will curve slightly to the right.
Then, we will draw a vertical line down from the spiral at the top. It will have a very slight curve to it, and it will gradually curl to the left.
Next, it will curl even further until you have a second spiral that is in the opposite direction to the previous spiral.
You will also notice that this second spiral is a lot larger than the first one. Try to follow the reference image that we laid out as closely as you can!
In the next step, we will be ready to finish off the rest of the outline for this letter.
STEP 3:
As we mentioned in step 2, this next step will be about finishing off the outline of your fancy letter R. There is a lot to do in this step, so we will break it down into smaller chunks.
Start by drawing a vertical curved line down from the pointy shape at the top of the letter. Then, we will draw the ‘leg’ of the letter.
This will be drawn using some slightly curvy lines extending out and ending in a pointy tip. You can then connect this leg to the bottom spiral that you drew earlier.
Then, all that will remain will be to draw the hole at the center of the letter. This will normally be simple in a normal letter R, but we will make it a bit more unusual here.
This shape will have a straight vertical line on the left, and then there will be a curved line on the right side. It’s as simple as that, and then the outline is complete!
If you drew a pencil guide earlier, you may as well erase it now, as you won’t be needing it from this point onwards.
STEP 4:
The outline is complete, and now we can draw some details in and around the letter R. As you can see in the reference image, we started with a spiraled line on the top and lower points of the letter.
You could add a few more of these if you wanted to as well! Next, we added some details inside the outline of the letter.
For our version, we filled the interior of the letter with some curvy, wavy lines to give it a more intricate look. This looks great, but there are many other ways to fill this outline.
You could choose a different pattern, fill it with little shapes or anything else you can think of! This is a step where you can really get creative with it.
You could use our design, a variation on it or go for something completely different. Then, in the next step we will add some details around the letter, so let’s get to that when you’re finished with these details!
STEP 5:
Now, we will be adding some final little details around the letter. These details are all rather simple, but they can really help to bring this design to life.
First, we added some dots along the outer edge of the letter. We kept this minimal, but you could add many more of these if you like.
Next, we added some small teardrop shapes to the outside edges of the spirals on the lower left and right of the letter.
Once again, if you like the way these look then you could add a lot more to the design if you wanted.
We finished off with some simple line details close to the outline at various points of the letter.
When it comes to these details, it’s again up to you to decide how many of them you want to include in your own design.
You can also change around the places these details are or change the sizes. Once you have played around with these kinds of details, you can also add some interesting background details.
There is a lot you can do with the background, and we will cover some possibilities after the next step of the guide.
STEP 6:
There are few things that bring a drawing to life more than color, and that is what we will add in this final step of the guide.
In our reference image, we will show you our way of coloring this letter, but it’s one of many possibilities. We chose a deep purple color for the letter, and it gives the letter a beautiful look!
If you like the color we chose for this letter, you could recreate the look for your own letter. Or, there are so many other colors you could choose from!
Everyone has a favorite cilor, and you could use yours for the drawing. You don’t need to stick to just one color either, as there are so many ways to add multiple colors to the design.
The color choices are just a part of it, as there is also the fun of choosing which art tools and mediums you will use to bring the colors to life.

It could be a simple word, the name of a place, or you may like to write out a name that starts with R.
Whatever word you choose, you could then add details and small pictures that relate to your word.
