Top 10 Fastest Muscle Cars of 1971 (1)

It may surprise you that the fastest muscle cars of 1971 were almost as quick as those produced in 1970. However, it probably won’t shock you to learn that they all outperformed muscle cars in 1972.

In fact, there was only a 0.20-second gap between the fastest muscle car of 1970 and that of 1971.

The quickest muscle car of 1970, the 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda, completed a quarter-mile run in 13.10 seconds. Meanwhile, the quickest muscle car of 1971, the 1971 Ford Torino Cobra 429 SCJ, did the same in 13.30 seconds.

Despite Federal emission standards tightening and reducing compression ratios, performance muscle cars still thrived, even though their horsepower and torque ratings were somewhat diluted.

While 1971 did mark the beginning of the end of the muscle car era, it wasn’t quite the catastrophic death of high performance that many believe it to be.

Conclusion

The muscle car era of the 1960s and early 1970s produced some of the most iconic and fastest cars in American history. While 1971 marked the beginning of the end for this era, it was not a sudden death but a gradual decline. As evidenced by the comparable speeds of the fastest muscle cars of 1970 and 1971, performance muscle cars were still alive and well, albeit with somewhat diluted horsepower and torque ratings. Though the era eventually came to a close, it remains a celebrated and beloved period in automotive history, and the legacy of these powerful and iconic cars continues to influence car enthusiasts to this day.

Donald, thanks for the question! According to the automotive magazines that published road tests in 1971, there were at least 13 other supercars that recorded faster quarter-mile times than the 1971 Chevelle SS that year. In the January 1971 issue of Car Craft magazine, a 454-equipped 1971 Chevelle SS recorded a 14.35-second quater-mile, traveling 97.1 miles per hour. I hope it helps!

The 1971 SS LS6 454 Chevelle ran a 12.9 second quarter mile. The Chevelle you are talking about is not the LS5 or LS6. You might want to actually look at MotorTrends tests. The 1970 LS6 454 Chevelle had the fastest time of all tested muscle cars and was ranked number 1. Not one of these tests ever included the Corvette. It was faster than all of the cars you listed. The Camaro from 1967 on was also never tested. The Yenko Chevrolet 67-70 Camaro’s, Chevelle’s and Nova’s with the 427/435hp motor that hit 500hp at 5400rpm was also never tested. These facts make you and motor trend look like frauds
