  • Lows Driver's seat set too high, larger wheel-and-tire combo hurts ride isolation, hi-po GT model can overpower the front tires.
  • Verdict The K5 is a pretty impressive family sedan thanks to an attractive price, upscale features, and a potent 290-hp engine option.

Overview

Even with the dwindling desirability of family sedans, Kia has crafted a compelling example with the all-new 2021 K5. Its daring design evokes sportiness and luxuriousness, and the sleek-looking four-door is a legitimate head-turner. The cabin is elegantly appointed and available with desirable content. While the K5 isn't particularly entertaining to drive, its standard powertrain and hushed cabin provide a refined experience. The 290-hp GT model comes with performance equipment that provides blazing acceleration, but the added potency is prone to overpowering the front tires. Still, a spacious back seat and generous trunk make it a useful alternative to popular crossover SUVs, especially with its optional all-wheel-drive system. The death of the mid-size sedan may be imminent, but the 2021 K5 is one of the best left and even made our Editors' Choice list.

What's New for 2021?

Kia completely redesigned the Optima and renamed it K5 for 2021, which makes it consistent with the sedan's global nameplate. The sedan boasts a bolder exterior and a truly luxurious interior. It also shares a platform with its corporate counterpart, the Hyundai Sonata, which was all-new for 2020. The Kia is also available with all-wheel drive for the first time.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2021 Kia K5 starts at $24,585 and goes up to $31,585 depending on the trim and options.

The base K5 only costs $100 more than the outgoing Optima. It also offers the significantly sportier GT model, which loves to fry the front tires with its 290-hp engine. Those who don't care about having the most powerful engine but want some of the GT's racier elements can consider the GT-Line, as we would. It comes standard with a sportier body kit and 18-inch wheels, a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and charging ports for back-seat passengers. Those who want all-wheel drive can add it for $3700. This upgrade also brings adaptive cruise control, full LED headlights, a heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, and wireless charging.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Most K5 models are motivated by a 180-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder that pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The engine comes standard with front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is optional, but not on the GT model. The front-drive, 180-hp K5 we drove demonstrated decent acceleration around town, and our testing revealed a 7.0-second trip to 60 mph. However, it was less impressive at highway speeds, where it needed extra time to execute passes. Still, its dutiful transmission and well-insulated cabin helped ensure its engine noise rarely rose above a dull roar. The full-Monty GT model has a more powerful 2.5-liter turbo-four that generates 290 horses and 311 pound-feet of torque. Along with its exclusive eight-speed automatic (with the same wet dual-clutch as the Hyundai Sonata N Line), the sportiest K5 is also fitted with bigger brakes, a unique suspension tune, and wider tires on larger 19-inch rims. The GT we drove sprinted to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds and stopped from 70 mph in 163 feet. The Sonata N Line was slightly quicker to 60 mph (5.0 seconds) and stopped even shorter (152 feet). However, the hi-po Hyundai we tested wore optional summer tires (the Kia only comes with all-seasons) that contributed to the performance disparities.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA estimates the 2021 K5 with the base four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive will earn up to 29 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. Both those ratings take a big hit when all-wheel drive gets into the mix, dropping to 26 mpg city and 34 highway. Still, both figures are similar to the all-wheel-drive Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry. The front-drive-only, 290-hp K5 GT is the least efficient of the bunch at 24 mpg city and 32 highway. We evaluated a front-drive K5 with the standard powertrain on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test and it returned an impressive 43 mpg, beating its government rating by 5.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Inside, the K5 looks amazing for how much it costs. The layout is both sophisticated and straightforward, and the cabin is appointed with attractive materials such as wood trim on the dash and doors. The K5 also offers an array of upscale interior features, such as ambient interior lighting on the dash and doors, heated and ventilated fronts seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a wireless charging pad. While the driver's seat feels high even at its lowest point, the comfortable spot for your left foot and floor-hinged accelerator are nice touches. The back seat also provides generous legroom, and the trunk has plenty of space for luggage. We managed to fit seven carry-on suitcases back there.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The K5 comes with a standard 8.0- or an optional 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is enclosed in a large piano-black bezel that also houses the car's gauge cluster. Both systems have a volume knob as well as physical buttons on the steering wheel. While the smaller display offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, oddly, the larger screen does not and requires a corded connection. However, the upgraded unit does have customizable profiles and the ability to connect two Bluetooth devices at the same time. The K5 is also available with a 12-speaker Bose audio system for those who want the best auditory experience.

I am an expert and enthusiast assistant. I have access to a wide range of information and can provide assistance on various topics. Let's dive into the information related to the concepts mentioned in this article.

Kia K5 Overview:

The 2021 Kia K5 is a family sedan that offers an attractive design, upscale features, and a potent 290-horsepower engine option. It has received positive reviews for its gorgeous exterior and interior, upscale features at a friendly price, and satisfying operation of the base powertrain. However, some drawbacks include the driver's seat being set too high, a larger wheel-and-tire combo that affects ride isolation, and the high-performance GT model overpowering the front tires. Overall, the K5 is considered a pretty impressive family sedan [[1]].

Redesign and Name Change:

The 2021 Kia K5 is a completely redesigned version of the Kia Optima. Kia renamed the Optima as the K5 to align with the sedan's global nameplate. The redesign includes a bolder exterior, a luxurious interior, and the availability of all-wheel drive for the first time [[2]].

Pricing and Trim Options:

The price of the 2021 Kia K5 starts at $24,585 and goes up to $31,585, depending on the trim and options chosen. The base K5 is priced just $100 more than the outgoing Optima. The GT model, which features a 290-horsepower engine, is available for those seeking a sportier option. The GT-Line trim offers some of the GT's racier elements without the most powerful engine. All-wheel drive can be added as an option for an additional $3700, which also includes adaptive cruise control, full LED headlights, a heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, and wireless charging [[3]].

Engine and Performance:

Most K5 models are equipped with a 180-horsepower turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional on select trims. The GT model features a more powerful 2.5-liter turbo-four engine generating 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. The GT model also comes with a unique suspension tune, bigger brakes, and wider tires on larger 19-inch rims. In performance tests, the GT model accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds and stopped from 70 mph in 163 feet [[4]].

Fuel Economy:

The 2021 Kia K5 with the base four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive has an EPA-estimated fuel economy of up to 29 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. The ratings drop to 26 mpg city and 34 mpg highway when equipped with all-wheel drive. The GT model, with its more powerful engine, has a fuel economy of 24 mpg city and 32 mpg highway [[5]].

Interior and Features:

The interior of the Kia K5 is elegantly designed and offers attractive materials such as wood trim on the dash and doors. The cabin features upscale interior features, including ambient interior lighting, heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a wireless charging pad. The driver's seat may feel set too high, but the back seat provides generous legroom, and the trunk offers plenty of space for luggage. The K5 comes with an 8.0- or optional 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration on the smaller display. The larger screen requires a corded connection for these features [[6]].

Safety and Warranty:

The 2021 Kia K5 has received a five-star crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and has been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It offers a variety of standard and optional driver-assistance technologies, including forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert. Kia provides a comprehensive warranty, including a five-year/60,000-mile limited warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty [[7]].

These are the key points related to the concepts mentioned in the article. If you have any more specific questions or need further information, feel free to ask!
